How Chemical Peels Work

Chemical peels are liquid chemical solutions that deeply cleanse and exfoliate the skin. These superficial peels are applied to the face, neck, or other areas to slough off layers of dry, dead skin.

Chemical peels treat a variety of concerns, including:

  • Texture
  • Acne and Acne Scars
  • Fine Lines and Wrinkles
  • Sun Damage
  • Hyperpigmentation/Sun Spots

Types of Chemical Peels

There are hundreds of different brands of chemical peels on the market, with most options fully customizable to fit your skin’s needs.

Chemical peels are generally categorized based on the level of intensity:

Superficial Peels – considered the gentlest option, superficial peels exfoliate the topmost layer (epidermis) of the skin, making them an ideal option for first-timers and those with sensitive skin.

These peels typically contain ingredients such as lactic and glycolic acid that gently clear the pores and leave a glow.

Medium Peels – Next in line in intensity, a medium peel will target the skin’s surface layer, eventually going deeper into the upper layers of the underlying dermis. These peels typically contain higher levels of glycolic acid that penetrate the skin to remove damaged skin cells while treating more stubborn concerns such as acne scars and moderate sun damage.

Deep Peels – looking at the highest level of intensity, deep peels target the innermost layers of the dermis to treat severe sun damage and heavy wrinkles. Deep peels may contain TCA and phenol formulas and may even require IV sedation due to the level of strength involved.
